HAVANA, Cuba, May 6 (ACN) Carlos Daniel Albornoz and Luis Ernesto Quesada will face each other today in a duel of Cubans in the Elite group of the international chess tournament Capablanca in Memoriam, which is led by Ukrainian Ruslan Ponomariov after three rounds at the downtown Habana Libre Hotel.
Precisely, Ponomariov was the only Sunday winner in the strongest section of the event when he defeated Luis Ernesto in 33 moves of an Italian opening, with white pieces.
The 2002 world champion used his known precision in advantageous positions to "squeeze" every weakness of his opponent and thus reached 2.5 points, half ahead of India's Aryan Chopra.
Chopra tied with Denmark's Mads Andersen, while Albornoz divided the unit with Norway's Evgeny Romanov and the standings began to " extend".
Luis Ernesto, current Cuban champion, was left with two units and is in third place ahead of Albornoz, Romanov and Andersen, owners of one point each.
Monday, in addition to the aforementioned battle between Cubans, Ponomariov will face Chopra and Romanov vs. Andersen.
