HAVANA, Cuba, Jan 23 (acn) At just few days to represent Cuba in the Caribbean Series, the monarch Pinar del Río gave a blow of authority on Cuban baseball championship to complete the sweep over the leader Matanzas with a 7-3 win.
William Saavedra and Olber Peña led the offense of the current champions with a homer and two RBIs per capita; while the relief pitcher Isbel Hernández was the winner and Vladimir Gutierrez achieved his 13th save of the season.
It was the first sweep of the campaign suffered by the Matanzas Crocodiles, who despite the decline remain on top of the standings with 39 wins and 21 losses, with just one game ahead of Granma (38-22), which was beaten 5-4 by Isla de la Juventud during evening hours.
The rookie Yunieski Diaz took the win by allowing only one hit in three innings of work while first baseman Luis Felipe Rivera and outfielder Yusniel Ibáñez were the offensive leaders when driving in the decisive runs in the bottom of the ninth inning for the Pirates.
Industriales managed to score all their runs in the ninth to walk off 4-3 Holguin, the decisive RBIs went to the record of Yunieski Gourriel, Wilfredo Aroche and the pinch hitters Felix Carbonell and Yulieski Gourriel to complete the other sweep of the day.
Finally, Ciego de Avila defeated 14-4 Artemisa thanks to powerful attack of 14 hits, including homers by José A. García, Humberto Morales, Yoelvis Fiss and Yeniet Pérez.
