HAVANA, Cuba, Jan 22 (acn) The Cuban U-20 soccer team needs a win today against El Salvador, in group B of CONCACAF world cup qualifying tournament, based in Jamaica.
This is because, after four dates of the preliminary phase, the pupils of Coach William Bennet total four points thanks to a win, one draw and two defeats.
If Cuba defeats El Salvador, they would finish third in the group. A loss or draw would take them out of the way towards the World Cup, to be held this year in New Zealand.
With only one round left, Mexico commands the group with perfect performance of 12 points, followed by Honduras (7), El Salvador (5), Cuba (4), Canada (3) and Haiti (2).
In their first two games, the Cubans lost 1-9 and 0- 3 to Mexico and Honduras respectively, then they drew 2-2 against Haiti and in the fourth match they surprisingly beat 2-1 Canada.
This tournament in Jamaica, which involves 12 teams, will grant four berths to the WC in New Zealand. The leaders of each poole will get the direct ticket, while the second and third places will go to the semifinals for the two spots remaining.
