BAYAMO, Cuba, Jan 21 (acn) The duo of Samuel Yera Pompa and Delvis Pérez Álvarez, from the province of Villa Clara, won the 33rd Incendio de Bayamo trout fishing national tournament, which took place in Granma between January 17 and 20.
The competition, held at the Leonero lagoon, in the municipality of Río Cauto, and awarded in the provincial capital, paid tribute to those who on January 12, 1869, burned the city to demonstrate their decision to give everything for freedom.
Each worker- athlete participated in two days of capture, in which Yera Pompa and Pérez Álvarez totaled 52 pounds and 10 ounces, followed by Pablo Cordero Gonzalez and Roberto Yong Carmona, from Pinar del Rio, with 45 pounds and five tenths of an ounce.
The third place went to another pair from Villa Clara, made up by Hector del Pino Alba and Domingo Rodriguez Soria, who amounted 40 pounds and seven tenths of an ounce.
In the individual event, the winners were Yera Pompa ( 29:07), Cordero González (27:02) and Pérez Álvarez (23:03).
It was the third time that Yera Pompa wins this competition, having done so in 1993 and 1997.
The largest specimen of the contest, a trout of seven pounds and 10 ounces, was captured by Havana´s Ibrahim Borroto OFarrill, first-time participant in the event.
The weighing of the trouts caught the last day of the contest, which has annual basis and is among the most prestigious and long lived recreational events in the country, was held at Francisco Maceo Osorio square, in the historical center of Bayamo.
The competition i nvolved 16 pairs of athletes, including the top five Cuban couples and others from the provinces of Granma, Pinar del Rio, Havana, Mayabeque, Villa Clara, Sancti Spiritus, Camaguey, Las Tunas, Holguin and Guantanamo.
