HAVANA, Cuba, Dec 17 (acn) Cuban Leinier Dominguez finished fifth today in the Basque mode, last event of the Chess Mind Games, hosted by the Chinese capital as closing of the competitive season.
Leinier achieved 5.5 of possible 10 in a game mode few called in which each match includes a pair of simultaneous games and partly erased his discrete performances in rapid and blitz events.
The Caribbean reached three wins, two losses and five draws, but the most important is that he was only beaten in the match against Russian Ian Nepomnichtchi, event winner with 7.5 units.
Leinier defeated Polish Radoslaw Wojtaszek and Ukrainian Ruslan Ponomariov and drew against Russian Alexander Grischuk and Hungarian Peter Leko.
Nepomniachtchi was escorted by Azeri Teimour Radjabov and Frenchman Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, both with six points and placed in that order by tiebreaker, as reported by the organizers.
The women's competition was won by the host Yifan Hou with 8.5 points and was followed by Russian Alexandra Kosteniuk (7) and her compatriot Xue Zhao (6).
The World Mind Games, which also summon competitions of draughts, xiangqi, go and bridge, were attended by 16 Chess players from both sexes, all included in the top of the world rankings.
As usual the chess contest also included the rapid (20 minutes games) and Blitz (3 minutes games) events.
Leinier finished tenth in the first one and eleventh in the second, results that do not respond fully to his actual playing strength.
