HAVANA, Cuba, Jul 3 (ACN) Cuban fencers Elizabeth Hidalgo and Yunaisi Montero left today without medals in the first day of fencing at the XXIV Central American and Caribbean Games in San Salvador.
Hidalgo had a very good group phase with four wins and only one setback with a score of 1-5 against Mexico's Nataly Michel; while her teammate was more discreet with only one victory in five appearances.
In the round of 16, Hidalgo defeated local athlete Irene Mena 15-3, and in the next bout she was unable to prevail against Mexican Denisse Hernandez, who beat her 15-7, leaving her off the awards podium.
Also on Sunday, the Island's swordsmen Ringo Quintero and Dariel Carrion were close to the medals when they lost the matches that gave them a pass to the semifinals.
In that instance, Quintero was 15 to 13 ahead of Daniel Ojeda, from Costa Rica, but in the following match he lost with a close score of 10-11 to Venezuelan Grabiel Lugo.
Something similar happened to Carrion, who beat Panama's Jose Eduardo Quiros 15-14 in the round of 16, and then lost 11-15 to Colombia's Jhon Rodriguez in the round of eight.
In Barranquilla 2018, Cuban fencing had an outstanding performance by winning that sport by countries with seven gold medals and four bronze medals.
