Santiago de Cuba and Holguin Enter Qualifying Zone in Baseball Series

HAVANA, Cuba, Dec 10 (acn) The s quads of Santiago de Cuba and Holguin appeared today in the called qualifying area to the second phase of the Cuban National Baseball Series, after their wins on Tuesday over Isla de la Juventud and Villa Clara respectively.

With just three hits, including a three-run homer by PH Edilse Silva, the Santiago Wasps achieved their third win in four games by beating 7-2 Isla de la Juventud, with credit from the mound to the veteran Danny Betancourt.

In turn, the Holguin Hounds defeated 3-1 Villa Clara, with especial highlight to the outfielder Geidis Soler who hit a solo homer , besides the solid work by the starter Yunier Suarez, who allowed only three hits and one earned run in six innings , although the winner was the speedy reliever Yaisel Sierra.

Holguín now ranks seventh on the standings with 18 wins and 17 losses, while Santiago de Cuba (19-18) is eighth and the Villa Clara Oranges appear ninth (18-18), at just half a match from their rivals in the struggle for qualifying.

The current monarch Pinar del Río (15-18) accentuated its decline after losing 1-2 to Industriales (22-15), with the first win of the season for the closer Alexander Rodriguez and offensive highlight by the rookie outfielder Yunier Diaz, 2 for 3 with two doubles and one RBI.

In addition, Matanzas ( 24-13) ratified itself as leader when defeating 9-6 Guantánamo, to maintain an advantage of one match over its closest pursuer, Granma (21-12), team that also kept its winning streak by walking off 6-5 Las Tunas.

On the other matches of the day, Ciego de Avila won 2-0 over Artemisa, Mayabeque beat 4-3 Sancti Spiritus, and Cienfuegos defeated 6-3 Camagüey.
