Cuban GM Bruzon Wins Blitz Event in Colombia

HAVANA, Cuba, Dec 8 (acn) Cuban chess player Lázaro Bruzón won with 12 points the Blitz event and remained on top of the classical contest ITT Millonario, which ends today in the Colombian city of Bogota.

Bruzón achieved 11 wins, two draws and only lost once at the hands of the host David Arenas, who finished ninth in a competition convened to 14 five-minute matches by the Swiss System.

Peruvian Emilio Córdova, also with 12 points, but with lower tie-break, escorted the Cuban, while Paraguayan Axel Bachman finished third with 11 units.

The next best performance by a Cuban was the fifth seat achieved by Aramis Alvarez (10.5), half an unit more than his compatriots Yusnel Bacallao and Isam Ortiz, seventh and eighth, respectively.

The tournament was attended by 122 players and was part of the competitive movement started four days ago with the classical event which two final rounds will be held today.

Bruzón continues on top of the standings with six units in seven rounds after winning in the latest match over the current Cuban national monarch Ortiz, according to the specialized site www.chess-results.com.

Cordova also reached that amount and is second after beating Alberto Rivera, who plays under the flag of the International Federation.
