VERACRUZ, Mexico, Dec 1 (acn) The joys of Cuba lasted until the last day of the 22nd Central American and Caribbean Games, although the biggest Caribbean nation had already won the whole competition, Richer Pérez and Dailin Belmonte earned gold and silver medals in that order in the marathon event to increase the festivities.
Thus, Perez entered the regional sports history as the first Cuban man able to win the grueling event with time of 2:19.13 hours.
So he achieved his personal best which was enough to beat the defending champion, the Guatemalan Jose Amado Garcia (2:19.45) and the favorite Aztec Daniel Vargas (2: 20.27).
Also historical was the performance by Dailin Belmonte, who finished second (2: 42.01) in race dominated by Mexican Margarita Hernández, with record for the event of 2: 41.16 hours.
Belmonte was escorted on the podium by Venezuelan Zuleima Amaya (2: 42.27) and became Cuba's third silver medalist in these contests after Maribel Durruty in Santiago de los Caballeros 1986 and Yailen Garcia in Cartagena de Indias 2006.
On the race, she said that from the 30th kilometer she took her greatest forces in search of the first place, which could not be due to the higher quality of the local athlete.
