HAVANA, Cuba, Oct 7 (can) Ciego de Ávila appeared today as undisputed leader of the Cuban baseball championship by beating yesterday 3-2 Matanzas, current runner-up.
The Ciego de Avila Tigers scored the decisive run in the bottom of the tenth inning with the complicity of the rival defense, while relief pitcher Yunier Cano reached his third win of the season by allowing just two hits in four innings.
Now, Roger Machado´s pupils command the standings with nine wins and only three defeats, closely followed by Industriales (8-4), who on Monday beat 2-1 Camagüey.
Third baseman Lourdes Y. Gourriel led Industriales´ attack by driving two decisive runs in the eighth inning at the expense of the defeated reliever Yormani Socarrás, while Jesus Balaguer took the win and Alexander Rodriguez achieved his third save.
In the other matches of the day, Artemis beat 6-4 Sancti Spiritus, Las Tunas won 5-0 over Isla de la Juventud; Villa Clara defeated 7-6 Mayabeque, Cienfuegos surpassed 4-3 Santiago de Cuba and Guantánamo did the same but 6-1 versus Holguin.
