Belgium Sweeps Cuba in World Volleyball ChampionshipHAVANA, Cuba, Sep 24 (acn) Cuban women's team lost against Belgium in the first round of World Volleyball Championship, which takes place until October 12 in several Italian cities.

In a match of group D, based in Bari, Cubans lost 0-3 ( 15-25, 12-25 and 16-25), in one hour and seven minutes.

However, the top scorer of the game was the Caribbean Melissa Vargas, who is only 14, with 15 points, but she was only backed up by Sulian Matienzo (8).

While Laura Aeyrman (14), Lise Van Hecke (11), Els Vindesteene (11) and Charlotte Leys (10) stand out in the victory of the European squad.

Juan Carlos Gala's young pupils´ next rivals will be Puerto Rico, Japan, China and Azerbaijan, respectively.
In the other two matches of this group, China and Azerbaijan defeated 3-0 and 3-2 Puerto Rico and Japan, in that order, according to the website of the event which meets on the first preliminary round 24 teams divided into four pooles.

Croatia, Dominican Republic and Italy beat 3-1, 3-0 and 3-0 Argentina, Germany and Tunisia, in that order, in group A, with a stage in Rome.

Yesterday's winners of poole B –in the city of Trieste- were Canada, Serbia and Brazil, who defeated 3-1, 3-1 and 3-0 Cameroon, Turkey and Bulgaria, respectively.
