Cuba Beats Venezuela in Volleyball Pan American CupHAVANA, Cuba, Aug 15 (acn) Cuban men's team defeated Venezuela in the quarterfinals of the 9th Pan American Cup, based in Tijuana, Mexico, where they will face Argentina in the semifinals today.

According to the website of the contest, Cuba beat the South Americans 3-2 ( 23-25, 25-20, 25-16, 29-31 and 15-6) in one hour and 56 minutes.

The top scorer of the match was Venezuela's Kervin Pinerua, who totaled 23 points, 19 in attack and four aces, followed by the Caribbean Javier Jiménez, with 20 units, 15 spikes, three blocks and two aces.

Rolando Cepeda (18), David Fiel (15), Osmani Uriarte (14) and Isbel Mesa (11) also excelled for Cuba, while the South Americans Jesus Chourio (12) and Hector Salermo (11) also had an outstanding performance.

After the match, Rodolfo Sanchez, Cuban coach, said it was a tough game, but we won and that's what matters.

He explained that they have been winning in five sets with a young team that makes some mistakes, which they expect to diminish in coming games.
In the other quarterfinal m atch, Puerto Rico beat 3-1 (27-25, 25-23, 23-25 and 25-16) Mexico and they will face USA today in the other semifinal, while Mexicans shall play tomorrow against Venezuelans for the fifth seat.

Meanwhile, the Dominican Republic defeated 3-1 (25-21, 25-27, 25-20, 25-21) Colombia, and will now fight for the seventh place versus Canada, while Colombians finished ninth and last in the standings.

The continental tournament grants tickets to the first five North, Central American and Caribbean teams for the 2015 World Volleyball League.
