HAVANA, Cuba, Dec 7 (ACN) Experts from the Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP) will present today the results of Cuba in the fight against polio and 20 years of collaboration with the World Health Organization, during the 80th Anniversary of the Pedro Kouri Tropical Medicine Institute (IPK) Congress, underway in Havana.
Dr. Miguel Ángel Galindo, founder of the National Immunization Program, created in 1962 and who has contributed significantly to reduce infant mortality due to communicable diseases, including vaccine-preventable diseases, will speak on the subject.
Dr. Lena López, National Director of the Immunization Program of Minsap, highlighted to the ACN that with a participatory nature, the community and all sectors, since its inception the program is based on universal coverage and accessible to the entire population.
Annually, an average of five million doses of vaccines are administered, both simple and combined, aimed at the prevention of 13 diseases; and polio, measles, rubella and severe forms of tuberculosis, among other ailments, have already been eliminated, she added.
