HAVANA, Cuba, Sept 5 (ACN) Dr. Alberto Hernandez Canero, one of the main founders of the National Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery Institute and its first Director died on Tuesday in Havana at the age of 97.
In 1966 he founded the Cardiology Institute and since then he has been leading the entity until a few years ago when his health did not allow him to continue with his responsibility, reports the Cuban Society of History of Medicine on the INFORMED website.
Hernandez Canero was Professor, Consultat and emeritus of the University of Medical Sciences in Havana, researcher and member of the Academy of Sciences between 2002-2006 and stood out for his contributions in cardiology of which he dedicated 70 years of his life.
Among his highlights is the formation of new specialists with human principles and ethics of the Revolution and his sence of responsibility and social commitment in the professional exercise of one of the most important health institutions in the country.
For his extensive and successful trajectory he received several recognitions, among them the Carlos J. Finlay and Frank Pais Order; 250 th anniversary of the University of Havana Medal; the Distinction for Cuban Education; Commander Manuel Fajardo, Distinguished Services of the Armed Forces, 30th anniversary of the Interior Ministry and the Central American and Caribbean Cardiology Society Medals.
Born on May 30th, 1920, in the municpality of San Cristobal in Pinar del Rio Province, the also Member of Honor of the Cuban Society on the History of Medicine, the eminent cardiologist taught at the Calixto Garcia University Hospital's Yarini Ward where the School of Clinical Medicine was located.
When he initiated his career, he was inclined towards cardiology that practiced in that same ward and in the former Our Lady of the Mercedes Hospital; later he carried out practices in the Municipal Children's Hospital, today the Pedro Borras Astorga Pediatric Hospital, read the note.
He began to work as a professor at the School of Clinical Medicine, first as associated doctor (1946-1950) and in 1950 and up until 1954 as instructor and during that same time he shared his activities with politics when he became member of the People's Socialist Party.
On July 31st 1953 –barely four years after having publshed the first text on the issue in the world- during the scientific session in the Municipal Children's Hospital he presented a work on the cardiac catheterization in Congenital Malformations, in cooperation with other doctors.
In the former Our Lady of the Mercedes, today Commander Manuel Fajardo Hospital he created the service of cardiovascular research that was a center of cardiology formation and the beginning of the Cariologist Institute in Havana where it contributed to his development and formation of the national cardiology network.
After an exodus of professors and cardiology specialists in 1960 and in response to the call of the Government Board of the University he joins as professor and later the cardiology services were created in 14 provincial hospitals and some municipalities, in addition to the educational centers in Havana.
His death signifies a great lost for medical sciences in Cuba.
