HAVANA, Cuba, Jun 13 (acn) The 35th Pan American Congress on Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery began on Monday in Havana with the participation of over 800 delegates from 43 nations.
The participants will discuss the advances of Cuba in the field includingcochlear implants totaling 360 so far on the island, mainly to children, with positive results. The event will run until Thursday at Havana's Convention Center.
Dr. Antonio Paz Cordovez, Cuban pioneer in the field and President of the Cuban Otolaryngology Society told the Cuban News Agency that Cuba is one of the countries with the most implants to people with hearing disabilities amounting to 30 so far this year.
Cuba has some 450 professionals in the field in all of the national and provincial hospitals and at the municipal level, said Dr. Paz Cordovez president of the forum's organizing committee.
High level scientific work and updated themes will be presented in the congress among them the implant ear pieces, endoscopic surgery, cranial base surgery, robotic medicine, Otolaryngology Pediatrics and head and neck cancer surgery among others.
Among renowned regional and international societies are the American Academy of Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery that is attending this congress for the first time and whose delegation surpasses 60 specialists.
Pre Congress courses will be held on Monday and the official inauguration of the event at the Convention Center headed by Dr. Antonio Paz Cordovez.
