HAVANA, Cuba, Sep 30 (acn) The president of the African Union Commission (AU), Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, expressed on Wednesday her gratitude to Cuba for the solidarity shown in various fields, especially in the fight against the Ebola epidemic that struck West Africa.
The AU appreciates the solidarity, friendship, care and support Cuba has always shown towards the countries of our continent, stated Dlamini-Zuma, who in the context of her official visit to Cuba recalled the historic ties with the island, as well as Cuba's support for the liberation deeds of nations of Africa, the Prensa Latina news agency reported on Wednesday.
During her meeting with the head of the Cuban Parliament, Esteban Lazo, the president of the AU Commission stressed in particular the participation of Cuban medical brigades to combat the Ebola virus epidemic, which affected mainly West African countries such as Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. We appreciate everything Cuba did for the nations that were suffering the consequences of Ebola, she said, while recalling that the island was one of the few countries outside Africa that sent human resources to counteract the epidemic: it was important to count on the support of Cuban doctors and nurses, she pointed out.
Also, Dlamini-Zuma asserted that Cuba has been present in Africa in many ways and in that regard highlighted cooperation with the island in various fields.
On this matter, she mentioned the cooperation of Cuban specialists in different sectors in African nations and also expressed her appreciation for the training of young Africans in universities on the island.
Likewise, Dlamini-Zuma reiterated the stance of the AU against the economic blockade imposed on the island by the United States for over half a century and that has affected several generations of Cubans.
For his part, the head of the Cuban Parliament asserted that ties between his country and Africa are very strong, and expressed the willingness "to continue strengthening the bonds of friendship uniting Cuba to the African continent."
At the meeting, Lazo also expressed Cuba's willingness to continue contributing to the progress of Agenda 2063, which sets the road map of the African continent to achieve sustainable, balanced development and poverty eradication, having 2063 as target date.
