HAVANA, Cuba, Jul 22 (acn) The 46th contingent of the Venceremos Brigade stressed on Monday in Havana that they will continue to fight for an end of the US economic blockade against Cuba.
During a meeting with representatives of the Institute of Friendship with the Peoples, ICAP, and local government officials of Artemisa on the historic date in which the Cuban flag was raised outside what was the Cuban Interests Section, now embassy in Washington DC, the brigadistas said that this was a victory of the Cuban people for their resistance and struggle after over 50 years of aggressions.
Jonathan Montana from the Bronx, New York said that they are in Cuba to learn about the people and social achievements and take back those examplesto the US in order to educate the American people about the realities of the Revolution. He pointed out that people in the US are at their "peak of frustration of how things are done in the states".
Stephanie Nunez from Washington Heights in New York said that she came to Cuba to learn for herself about the realities on the island since all news in the US about the Caribbean island are distorted. The brigadista of Dominican origin said that she chose the Venceremos Brigade because it was a way of challenging the travel ban imposed by the US government against its own citizens and because it's a way of representing all the oppressed in the US.
Stephanie added that despite the improvement of relations between the US and Cuba, the struggle continues and believes it's more important than ever to express solidarity with the Cuban people. "It is important to educate the American people about all the suffering that US administrations have imposed on the Cuban population and we must help Cuba in their defense of their independence and self-determination", said the brigadista. She stressed that "now is when our work is most important".
Sandra Ramirez, director of the North American division of the Institute of Friendship with the Peoples, ICAP, reminded everyone that the Venceremos Brigade was the first solidarity group that visited Cuba.
She thanked them for their struggle in support of Cuba and stressed that they are part of Monday's historic moment in which the Cuban flag was raised at its Interest Section in Washington DC. She pointed out that there is a long path ahead because we must continue working to end the blockade, travel ban and demand the closing of the illegally occupied US Naval Base in Guantanamo.
The 46th contingent of the Vencermos Brigade is made up by close to 50 brigadistas from all over the US that will carry out a program of activities to learn about the current economic transformations, culture, and music, health and education sectors and do voluntary work together with their Cuban counterparts. They will also be celebrating alongside the Cuban people the 62nd anniversary of the attack against the Moncada and Carlos Manuel de Cespedes Garrisons which initiated the struggle for Cuba's independence.
