HAVANA, Cuba, Sep 1 (ACN) The 11th International Conference on Ticks and Tick-borne Pathogens opened its doors in this city, as announced by ScD Mario Pablo Estrada Garcia, chair of the Scientific Committee of the event, sponsored by the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB) and deemed one of the most important on this field in the world.
More than 150 experts from 40 countries, who represent internationally renowned institutes, universities and research centers engaged in the study of these parasites and the diseases they transmit, will session until Wednesday at the Meliá Cohíba Hotel and, as of Thursday, at the Varadero International Hotel in the province of Matanzas.
Dr. Estrada García remarked that the topics encompass the taxonomy and evolution of ticks and tick-borne pathogens, and their ecological and epidemiological aspects, pathogenesis and diagnosis, as well as strategies for control, including immunity and vaccines.
The first of these international conferences was held in 1992, in Minnesota, U.S.A., followed by the editions of 1995 (Kruger National Park, South Africa), 1999 (Tatra Mountains, Slovakia), 2002 (National Park of Canada), and 2005 (Neuchatel, Switzerland). Then came the ones of 2008 (Buenos Aires, Argentina), 2011 (Zaragoza, Spain), 2014 (Cape Town, South Africa), 2017 (Cairns, Australia), and 2022 (the Danube Delta, Romania).
