Latin Countries Ask Cuba for Help on Hazardous Waste Disposal

HAVANA, Cuba, Jan 30 (acn) The Center for Protection and Hygiene of Radiations (CPHR by its Spanish acronym) announced it received requests from several Latin American countries on their experience in implementing the management of non conventional hazardous waste.

Representatives of Costa Rica, Ecuador and Panama showed interest in knowledge on the management of such waste, the Master in Science José Luis Peralta Vital, head of environmental services at CPRH, located in the Havana municipality of Guanabacoa, told ACN.

He also mentioned the existence, in that sense, of a collaborative project with the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela in three major hospitals in the nation, with satisfactory results.
Procedures with these non-radioactive elements are a very new issue internationally and Cuba began to operate on them from the second half of the 1990s, recalled the source.

Peralta Vidal said the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (CITMA) instructed his institution to deal with the formalities since they are, from 2008, members of the Commission on Prevention and Control of Pollution.

He noted that for more than eight years the institution has provided advice for the safe management of hazardous wastes and obsolete and idle chemicals to more than 30 national organizations.

However, he clarified that in Resolution 139 of 2009; CITMA established the rules for integrated management and is mandatory for all companies in the nation.

He said that the service itself is charged at the level of institution, by a contract between the parties and its record of cost includes technical aspects, but if done outside of Havana, includes the costs of lodging, food, transportation and others for its staff.

Among the hazardous wastes generated in most institutions are waste oil, obsolete car batteries, cast lighting, electronics and other equipment scrap, as well as from production processes.
