Havana, Dec 26 (ACN) The deployment in Cuba of WHO’s One Health initiative includes a surveillance strategy based on the risk of an avian influenza emergency, which is essential for the prevention and early detection of this threat to animal and human health, said Doctor in Agricultural Sciences Nivían Montes de Oca Martínez, director-general of the National Center for Agricultural Health.
“One Health is paramount to fulfill the UN 2030 Agenda, but in Cuba's case it is a national strategy for sustainable development, approved in 2021 by the Executive Committee of the Council of Ministers,” she remarked, “so its implementation should engage all management levels, especially the municipalities, to promote public local and regional development policies, which calls for training, research, innovation and communication to apply the best practices and tools in Cuba.”
The specialist stressed the need to raise awareness among scientists, academics, producers, consumers and the government so that One Health becomes successful, a goal yet to be reached.
