SANTA CLARA, Cuba, Aug 1 (ACN) In order to provide care to mothers in critical condition -due to complications before, during and after childbirth-, the Gynecobstetric Teaching Hospital "Mariana Grajales" in Villa Clara now has a small Intensive Care Unit.
This new room will help patients with convulsions, bleeding, eclampsia and preeclampsia associated with arterial hypertension (just to mention a few conditions), before they are admitted to the "Arnaldo Milian Castro" Provincial Hospital.
According to Dr. Mabel Merlan Martinez, specialist in charge of the ICU, other complications that refer patients to the ward are retroplacental hematomas and acute fatty liver during gestation, as well as advanced infections in the puerperium stage.
The ICU currently has two beds, equipped with all the necessary equipment for serious illnesses: mechanical ventilator, defibrillators, monitoring and electrocardiography equipment, as well as other supplies.
The remodeling that is gradually taking place nowadays at the "Mariana Grajales" Gynecobstetric Teaching Hospital is a process that amounts to 10 million pesos and has already produced tangible results in the Molecular Mocrobiology Laboratory, the Human Milk Bank, the steam boilers, the new conference room and the outdoor areas.
