Non-Aligned Movement: the US blockade does not correspond to our time

Non-Aligned Movement: the US blockade does not correspond to our timeHAVANA, Cuba, Oct 31 (ACN) The US blockade against Cuba is unjustifiable and does not correspond to our historical time, said in the General Assembly of the United Nations, the representative of Venezuela to that organization, speaking on behalf of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).

During his speech in the general debate on the resolution Necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States against Cuba, the Venezuelan diplomat pointed out that this instrument is a sign of the negative repercussions of unilateral coercive measures on the well-being of peoples and impedes the full enjoyment of their human rights.

He added that there is unanimity in the international community to end the blockade and adhere to the principles and purposes of the Charter of the United Nations and international law, including mutual respect, and noted that the United States continues alone in its policy of sanctions.

NAM reaffirms full respect for international law which constitutes an essential element in the maintenance of international peace and security and urges the world community to continue working with a view to reversing unilateral coercive measures including the blockade, the Venezuelan diplomat said.

In his statements, the Latin American representative expressed that Venezuela expresses its full solidarity with the Cuban brothers and sisters and called on the international community to reject the United States' proposed amendments, which "are intended to divert attention from the central issue we are dealing with today: the illegal blockade that has been imposed against Cuba for more than 50 years".

NAM member states urge to join the international majority in complying with the resolutions of this General Assembly in order to put an immediate and absolute end to the blockade against Cuba, he concluded.

This morning, the UN General Assembly is debating the draft resolution presented by Cuba calling for an end to the criminal blockade imposed by the United States on the island.
