Díaz-Canel attends inauguration of FIHAV 2018HAVANA, Cuba, Oct 30 (ACN) With the presence of Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez, President of the Councils of State and Ministers, the XXXVI International Fair of Havana (FIHAV 2018) was officially inaugurated in Monday in Expocuba fairgrounds.

Rodrigo Malmierca Díaz, Minister of Foreign Trade and Investment, informed at the opening of the event that more than three thousand exhibitors from 65 countries participate in this edition, with a contracted area of 24 thousand square meters.

Malmierca highlighted the atmosphere of enthusiasm that is observed, facing the upcoming work week, which will contribute to the main objectives of the event to promote business in the Cuban market, and provide domestic and foreign companies a space where to exchange on commercial and investment interests.

He pointed out that activities related to Havana's 500 years will be incorporated into the fair's program, including the presentation of projects to be executed in the capital on the occasion of the aforementioned anniversary, some of which are expected to have the support of international cooperation.

The Minister highlighted the broad participation in FIHAV 2018 of Cuba's main commercial partners, among them Venezuela, China, Russia and Spain, the last country to be once again the most represented in this commercial exchange.

Also worthy of special mention is the presence of Latin America and the Caribbean, with more than 20 nations, in line with the priority given to economic integration among the countries in the area.

Despite the intensification of the economic, commercial and financial blockade of the United States against the Island, and the retreat of diplomatic relations with Washington, North American companies that recognize the mutual benefits of the links with Cuban companies attend the event, he said.

Although well below the real interests and possibilities, he stressed that some businesses have been closed with entities in that country, including the new joint venture that will be established in the Special Zone of Mariel Development for the development of vaccines against cancer.

In the area of foreign economic policy, the objectives set for the expansion and diversification of ties with the rest of the world are being promoted, starting with making foreign trade more efficient, promoting exports of Cuban goods and services and improving the climate for foreign investment in the island.

The Minister commented that this year there has been progress in investments in priority sectors such as the development of renewable sources of energy, infrastructure, tourism, industry and the agri-food sector.

He stressed that during this year were approved regulations with a view to simplifying and streamlining the procedures for projects with foreign investment.

Ricardo Cabrisas, vice-president of the Council of Ministers, as well as other leaders, authorities of Havana and members of official delegations attended the inauguration of the event.

FIHAV 2018 will run until November 2 at Expocuba, during which more than 20 national days will be held.
