Havana, Cuba, Apr 6 (acn) The Portuguese Secretary of State for Tourism, Ana Mendes Godinho praised on Thursday in Havana the island's policy of tourism development, considered vital for the country's economy.
Mendes Godinho who is on a two day working visit to Cuba considers the strategy fundamental which Portugal also promotes, as seeing tourism as a way to revitalize different areas of the country.
The Portuguese official said that she is impressed at what she has seen in the streets of Havana in an attempt to increase hotel capacity.
Mendes Godinho stressed the interest of the business executives in her delegation in investing in Cuba and said that to explore such opportunities they will carry out several meetings with their Cuban counterparts.
According to the Portuguese official, another of the objectives is to intensify the presence of supplies for the hotels, which will allow Cuba to diversify its commercial partners.
As a perfect way to approach the market, Mendes Godinho pointed out that they are evaluating the possibility of participating in the upcoming International Tourism Fair to be held from May 3rd to the 6 th in Holguin with Germany as guest country.
Luis Faro, Portugal's ambassador in Cuba highlighted the positive political relations between both countries, which "has strengthened in the last year".
He recalled the official visit of President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousados in October of 2016 who met with his Cuban counterpart Raul Castro.
Mendes Godinho and Cuba's Minister of Tourism Manuel Marrero will sign a cooperation agreement, which will promote the work in key issues for the joint development of tourism.
The document will be the first signed by both nations, which includes different areas of interests like investment in hotel, training of professionals and exchanges of experiences.
As part of her program in Havana, the Portuguese Secretary of State for Tourism and delegation will travel to Varadero, the country's most important sun and beach tourism destination on Friday.
According to official statistics, Portugal obtained a 74.6 percent growth in visitors to Cuba during 2016.
