Cuba produces its first million tons of sugar in this harvest

HAVANA, Cuba, Feb 28 (ACN) The AZCUBA Business group, which runs all sugar facilities in Cuba, announced the country already passed the one million tons mark in the current harvest that started last November.

This is the fastest time Cuba produces its first million tons in the last 15 years, according to the head of communications of AZCUBA, Liobel Pérez.
There are 54 sugar mills operational this harvest, four more than in the previous one, and three provinces, Villa Clara, Ciego de Ávila and Holguín already produced 100 thousand tons a piece, while Las Tunas, Cienfuegos and Matanzas should accomplish that feat in the next days.
Executives of the company said there has been a great improvement in almost all production parameters, but still they have room through efficiency to grow.
Last harvest showed a decreased in overall output of 200 thousand tons compared to 2015, but Cuba aims at reverting that situation, a must-needed result, especially considering that world market prices are higher, in the neighborhood of 20 cents per pound.
