ARTEMISA, Cuba, Oct 11 (acn) More than 29 000 hectares (ha) of land are used this year in Cuba to tobacco planting, crop which began yesterday the 2016-2017 campaign at Batalla de las Guásimas Basic Unit of Cooperative Production (UBPC by its Spanish acronym).
Staggered plantings will last until the second ten days of November allowing early stockpiles to avoid shutdowns, said Nidia Garcia, general secretary of the National Union of Tobacco Workers.
She noted that the export layer the country needs for the current season is guaranteed with the hiring of 2 716 ha, half of them under the care of the workers of the Artemisa company, accustomed to an efficient campaign of high production levels.
The commitment of this entity rounds the 190 tons of exportable layer, higher than the previous year (114 tons), stated Francisco Lan, agricultural director, who added they already received all the resources tobacco planting demands and the skilled labor.
Some workers of this institution received the Carlos Baliño distinction by their labor during 25 years in a ceremony presided by José Antonio Valeriano Fariñas, Artemisa´s first secretary of the Cuban Communist Party, Idael Pérez, vice-minister of Agriculture, and Justo Luis Fuentes, president of TABACUBA higher body of business direction.
