Cuba Ag Minister calls for efficient use of new technologiesCIEGO DE AVILA, Cuba, Aug 23 (acn) Gustavo Rodriguez Rollero, Cuba´s Minister of Agriculture, urged in Ciego de Avila to efficiently implement new technologies and scientific advances to increase food production.

During a meeting with leaders of the province, he stated that the new cold season, which begins in September and ends in February next year, should be characterized by larger plantings than in the previous period.

He said they are already preparing the soil for planting potatoes in the center and west of the country with areas similar to those promoted last season, investment that costs every year millions of dollars in seed and other essential inputs.

Rodriguez Rollero added that it is necessary to make the most of soil moisture, well prepare the land and properly use irrigation machines to sustain production and increase yields per hectare.

The minister pointed out that they cannot forget periodic calibrations of irrigation equipment nor violating planned maintenance.

He summoned the men and women of urban and suburban agriculture and members of cooperatives to increase plantings of vegetables in order to guarantee them earlier this year in local markets and tourism.

He finally added that the Fitomas-E, a bio-stimulant produced in Cuba and very effective in various crops, is not used in some places by the lack of knowledge and its corresponding dosage.

National Agriculture officials also referred to the importance of nutritional balance for cattle and increasing of agro-ecology and breeding centers of Entomophagous fungi.

Yeisel Vega, deputy representative of Agriculture in Ciego de Avila, told ACN that the province intends to exceed 16 000 hectares of root vegetables, grains, vegetables and fruits planted in the preceding cold season.

A modern planter valued at 1 500 000 dollars, useful for all kinds of grains, especially beans and corn, investment that is part of what will be the largest Cuban barn, was assigned to La Cuba company of the province.
