HAVANA, May 11 (acn)In an effort to increase hard-currency revenues, Cuban agriculture has included organic products on its exports portfolio.
Agriculture official Leonardo Martinez told the Cuban News Agency that the export of organic fruits has also allowed exporting to Europe juices, produced at a citrus fruit micro-industry under an agriculture enterprise.
The commercial operations meet all rigorous international standards, including the certification of fruit plantations, producers and a local processing plant.
Martinez announce that that export plans for this year include organic avocado, while they are growing orange in 100 hectares of land for similar purposes, though they expect to further expand those plantations.
The initiative is also aimed at supplying tourist centers in the country with organic products, said the official. At present, Cuban agriculture is developing better watering systems, micro-industries to process fruits, and other resources that favor the export of these highly demanded organic products.
