HAVANA, Cuba, May 9 (acn) The European Union and Cuba face common challenges in agriculture, demography and economic growth, said European Union ambassador to Cuba Hernan Portocarero, who addressed the negotiation process to consolidate bilateral cooperation relations between the bloc of nations and the Caribbean island.
In statements to Granma newspaper, Portocarero recalled that the two sides concluded in March a negotiation process to advance long-term bilateral links and initialized a Political Dialog and Cooperation Accord, which is previous to the signing of such document.
The meetings served to learn how to know each other better, we talked politics in general terms and at times we faced each other in specific issues, said the ambassador and added that this is a learning process.
The negotiation process included bilateral cooperation by all our entities and also by the Cuban delegation and for the first time we have a far-reaching accord containing nearly all issues relevant to political and cooperation dialog for development, security, investment, and legal collaboration, migration and human rights.
It's been a two-year negotiation, Portocarero noted. Refering to bilateral cooperation, the diplomat said both sides are considering future areas in details, such as agriculture, food production and climate change, management update and foreign trade.
According to Portocarero, European Union priorities in Cuba are food security, climate change along with culture projects, since he said the future of the country is based on the reaffirmation of its own identity through music and its heritage. He cited collaboration in the restoration of a Spanish-style palace in Old Havana which will be a center for exchange between Europe and Cuba.
The diplomat said they still have to consider actions in the academic and scientific areas, and in foreign trade to boost the presence of Cuban products at the European market.
The European community is interested that Cuban society progressively transforms and by opening its economy preserves the social achievements and Cuban cultural identity.
