HAVANA. Cuba, May 6 (acn) In an unexpected announcement Argentina Airlines (Aerolineas Argentinas) will cut its two direct weekly flights from Buenos Aires to Havana in August despite the high level of sales reported by that service since January 2015.
According to Infobae website, the airlines cuts Sunday and Wednesday flights AR 1376 and AR1377 with stopover in Caracas using Boeing 737-800. The last flight to Havana will take place July 31 as the airlines has begun to reimburse travelers the money of the tickets previously expended.
Argentine travel agency managers confirmed the decision by the new staff of the airline company, while the entity itself informed the Cuban aeronautical logistics company ECASA the closing of services, and said that travelers from Argentina to Cuba can also use airlines like COPA, TACA, Avianca, LAN, TAME, AEROMEXICO and Cubana.
According to Infobae, the Argentine airline company closed the flights because Cuba is no longer a cheap destination as it has turned a more attractive place now highly demanded by US visitors, and because they did not have technically appropriate equipment to keep covering the route. However, the airlines will continue to fly to Cancun, Mexico and Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic.
On the other hand, prices in Cuba keep lower than in those Caribbean destinations, while an increasing number of Argentines want to visit Cuba, according to tourist experts, who said they could not understand the decision, which has no commercial reason.
But the measure is taken following the cut by the Mauricio Macri administration of half the financial support for the Argentine airline company.
Aerolineas Argentinas airlines opened two flights to Havana in January 2015 amidst an increasing flow of Argentine visitors to Cuba. The flights would initially take place from January to March during the high tourist season. But given the large sales of tickets the company decided to keep the service for a longer time and even coordinated for the opening of an office in Havana.
