CARICOM and Cuba to discuss energy cooperation projectsHAVANA, Cuba, Apr 15 (acn) A delegation of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) will travel to Cuba to assess possibilities for implementing renewable energy projects in the area, reported PL news agency.

Devon Gardner –Head of CARICOM Energy Unit, told Julio Cesar Gonzalez, Cuba's ambassador in Guyana, that the idea is to finalize plans to produce biogas and generate electricity from agricultural waste such as sugar cane bagasse, among other initiatives.

According to the official, the regional team will be headed by Mr. Joseph Cox, CARICOM Assistant Secretary - General for Trade and Economic Integration
Gardner also praised Cuba's contribution to the integration process of the area, human resources training and assistance to the Caribbean peoples, despite being victims of economic, financial and commercial blockade imposed by the United States for more than half a century.

CARICOM and Cuba maintain more than four decades of diplomatic relations based on friendship and collaboration.

Both parties conduct bilateral summits every three years in order to review and expand cooperation and integration projects in areas such as education, health, energy and trade, among others.
