HAVANA, Cuba, Mar 11 (acn) Rice production is among the prioritized programs in the eastern province of Holguin as an example of the integral potential of the region's soil perfect for different crops.
Unlike Granma, Sancti Spiritus, Pinar del Rio and Camaguey province with a rice tradition has already included rice production as one of their economic objectives in the agricultural entity in Mayari.
Ernesto Molina, Director of the entity told CAN that they began the first plantations three years in the region starting with the fertilization of the soil and the possibilities of exploiting the irritation systems through advantages offered by the Trasvase Este-Oeste work born in the areas of Mayari.
Molina highlighted having enough water about 300 hectares of land were cultivated with rice in 2015. This surface is feasible in progressively increasing with higher volumes of annual harvest.
For 2016, he stressed that over 500 hectares were cultivated by the company alone added to the other municipalities, especially Calixto Garcia and Banes although in limited surfaces.
The largest amounts of the farmers dedicated to rice production in the case of Mayari and other territories in Holguin belong to the cooperative sector whose inexperience in the cereal has made them extend its areas in response to the demands of the national economy.
Molina added that the potential of the soil in extending the cereal we must add the technological conditions to process rice at the industrial plant in Mayari which began to work barely a year ago.
