HAVANA, Cuba, Feb 5 (acn) Cuba and Japan signed on Thursday in Havana a contract to improve sanitary conditions in the municipality of Centro Havana as part of a cooperation project sponsored by the Japanese embassy on the island, reported Prensa Latina News Agency.
The Japanese embassy signed the accord with the Peace Movement and Disarm and Freedom NGO with the objective of supporting the distribution of cleaning equipment for the collection of wastes, reparation of communal spaces and the hygiene of the Havana municipality.
The project, with a cost of almost 70 thousand Euros also includes the implementation of an education program on environment for primary and secondary schools in the area.
According to Prensa Latina News Agency, the Japanese ambassador in Havana, Masaru Watanabe stressed that Cuba is one of the most important countries in the Caribbean and that is why his country is supporting various ways of cooperation especially in the technical consisting in sending specialists in different areas.
In statements to the press, the diplomat pointed out that other initiative make up the direct aid to communities and municipalities of which can include the participation of the NGO which allows the direct contact with the local representatives.
Regarding the signed contract on Thursday the president of the local municipal government Willy Fernandez thanked the Japanese embassy and the NGO for carrying out a program that will have an impact in the communities and is confident of future new cooperation.
The cooperation becomes a multidisciplinary project made up by institutions like the University of Havana, Jose Antonio Echeverria PolytechnicHigher Institute, Martin Luther King Jr. Center (NGO) among others that have as an objective the development of the region.
The Japanese ambassador added that one of the sectors of interest for the nation of the rising sun is tourism, economic and education sectors and an interest in academic exchanges with the cooperation of his government and the Cuban people.
