HAVANA, Cuba, Jan 19 (acn) Despite the impact of the severe drought in the reduction of the production volume of the current coffee harvest, over 90 percent of the crop in the province of Sancti Spiritus was characterized as first and second grade quality.
The lack of rain has impacted the coffee plantations whose harvest began last September; the workers in the province are now selecting the grain with major yielding despite the climate conditions.
According to Leosvaldo Cruz Duardo, main specialist at the Provincial Agriculture Office, the territory should pick 127 tons of coffee –already reported 96 tons-, and from this plan some 38 percent corresponds to the Arabic variety which classifies for exports.
Cruz added that up until now, the 2015-2016 season has been distinguished for its quality thanks to the planting of Arabic coffee, since the 50 tons that were planned represents double of selected the previous year.
Without knowing what the readjustment of the price of the grain represents, the specialist said that the current season is distinguished by the lack of plagues in the cultivation resulting as an efficient technical management.
Meanwhile, he stressed that there are four coffee centers in the communities of Seibabo, La Felicidad, La 23 and El Pedrero in Sancti Spiritus province, three with ecological technology of Colombian origin with notable advantages for the grain and the efficient use of the water.
With the previous equipment for example, they had to wait for a specific amount of coffee to get the machines running, but for the last two years they were able to work on a daily basis with the same quality.
