HAVANA, Cuba, Dec 18 (acn) More than a million Cubans are linked -from one way or another- to the National and Urban, Suburban and Family Agriculture Program, a production system that emerged 18 years ago.
D.Sc. Adolfo Rodriguez Nodals, head of the national group of that activity, told ACN that in Cuba there are many families living on the results achieved in this movement, which advocates for producing food in municipalities to reduce dependence on other territories.
He also reported that they are currently developing 31 subprograms and those with major difficulties are the use of the land, the production of animal feed, agro-ecological pest management and ownership and management of livestock.
He also said that more than two thousand units of production in the country are linked to the movement, which has enabled to diversify agriculture and encourage the nation's efforts to mitigate the consequences of climate change.
He also noted that this program contributes to food security of the population before and after hydro-meteorological phenomena as they enhance conditioning of nurseries and seed for future harvests.
He emphasized this practice also ensures compliance with planting plans in a timely manner , the use of organic matter , optimum state of organic farms, intensive and semi-protected orchards and farms for food production .
Similarly, the Doctor also highlighted the results of the province of Sancti Spiritus in the elimination of idle land, one of the regions of the island that has most progressed in this direction and where there are only to eradicate nearly 40 hectares of marabou in urban and suburban areas.
