Cuba-Viet Nam Cooperation Increases Rice Production

SAN JOSE DE LAS LAJAS, Cuba, Nov 24 (acn) The Cuba-Viet Nam Cooperation Project, aimed at increasing rice production and replacing imports, benefits 1,200 producers in the province of Mayabeque.

These actions began in 2011 and have two subprograms for the production and consumption of the grain and the obtaining of seeds.
Agricultural machinery and other inputs included in the agreement between the two nations come from the fraternal Asian nation, Vicente Martinez, director of the Provincial Grain Company, told the press.
Agriculture directors, farmers and Vietnamese advisers who share their knowledge with Cubans organized a workshop to discuss issues related to the difficulties limiting high yields.
Currently, Cuba imports more than 400,000 tons of rice annually from Brazil, Bolivia and Viet Nam, equivalent to 60 percent of the island's total consumption, hence the need to increase national production.
