Cuba and Germany Agree in Havana to Strengthen Bilateral BondsHAVANA, Cuba, Jul 16 (acn) With the aim of strengthening links and establish a practical and effective mechanism for political consultations between foreign ministries, Cuba and the Federal Republic of Germany signed on Thursday in this capital the Joint Declaration on Cooperation between the two governments and a memorandum of understanding.

After the meeting between Bruno Rodriguez, Foreign Minister, and his counterpart from that European country, Frank-Walter Steinmeier; Peter Rudolf Scholz, Germany's ambassador to Cuba, and Gerardo Penalver, Managing Director of Bilateral Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MINREX) signed the document.
At the meeting, Steinmeier expressed his gratitude and joy for this visit, because it is the first one ever made by a FM of the Federal Republic of Germany to Cuba.
I am very curious about the many conversations that we will have these two days, in which will address issues relating to the interests of the European Union and Cuba, he said.
With regard to the signing of the two documents, he stressed that they establish new bases between the two ministries and governments, and a mechanism for the exchange of views and positions.
Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez thanked Germany for its traditional support for the resolution presented by Cuba at the UN General Assembly, which demands the lifting of the economic, commercial and financial blockade unfairly imposed by the United States on the Caribbean island.
He said that this visit is a reflection of the positive development of ties between the two countries and reiterated the willingness of the Cuban government to continue promoting relations in all areas.
Parliamentarians, entrepreneurs, personalities of culture, sports and science, make up the European delegation, which was received on Thursday by Marino Murillo, member of the Politburo, vice president of the Council of Ministers, and Minister of Planning and the Economy.
