Implementation of State Budget confirms social policy of the Cuban Revolution

HAVANA, Cuba, Jul 16 (acn) Total expenses out of the 2014 Cuban Budget reached 49 billion 33 million pesos (similar to dollars at official Exchange rate) standing for 98 percent of what was planned.

The decrease was not positive since it was not linked to higher efficiency but to the failure of meeting production schedules, unbalanced labor in the budgeted sector and lack of planned activities expected to be backed by the budget.

The statement was made by lawmaker Lina Pedraza, minister of Finance and Prices, while submitting her sector's report to the parliamentarians on Wednesday.

From the structural point of view, 53 percent of the expenses went to financing social sectors like Education, public health and social assistance, confirming the social policies of the Cuban Revolution, she said.

The resources allocated to these sectors allowed a salary increase in public health, the increase in hospital activity with over 83 million specialized consultations; in education the budget guaranteed the studies of over one million 700 thousand students in pre-school, elementary, higher and adult education as well as 173 thousand higher education students.

The 2014 budget also backed subsidies for people to build or repair their homes, this represented benefits to 15 thousand households; the rehabilitation of nursing homes was also included, while 12 billion pesos were allocated to back productive activity, 61 percent of which to finance exports and replacement of costly imports and 2 billion 424 million pesos for the purchase of staples for the people's basic food and rationed basket.
