Cuba Keeps Boosting Co-op Initiatives in Non Agriculture Sector

HAVANA, Cuba, Feb 5 (acn) Cuban Domestic Trade Minister, Mary Blanca Ortega, said in central Cienfuegos city that the transfer of state-owned catering and service businesses keeps well underway throughout the country and it may take up to three years.

The initiative is part of the economic and social guidelines adopted by the Cuban Communist Party and has important impact on both the entities offering services and also their personnel. The process will take place in 2015 and 2016 and even in 2017 if necessary, said the Minister after considering that the initiative involves over 10 thousand state-owned businesses that will go under non-state management.

Ortega also announced the preparation of logistic strategies to provide the new businesses with necessary resources as she explained that they will be able to access wholesale markets, currently in the works.

The state-owned businesses that pass under non-state or cooperative management will operate with prices based on offer and demand, except for some services with topped prices for the people, such as the repair of domestic equipment distributed years ago under the national energy program. Also included are the prices of orthopedic shoes and some food products offered by business operating in hospitals and schools.
