Trout Fishing May Be Good For Boosting Cuban Tourism

Trout Fishing May Be Good For Boosting Cuban TourismBAYAMO, Cuba, Jan 22 (acn) After winning a major Cuban trout fishing tournament, connoisseurs of the discipline highlighted, in this eastern city, the potential the country has to increase tourist arrivals interested in this recreational practice.

Samuel Yera Pompa, tourists fishing guide in the northern keys of Villa Clara, told ACN that catching trout is costly, given the value of the required conditions, but its potential economic benefits are really incalculable.

He added that in industrialized countries there are millions of people interested in paying for catching, weighing and releasing these fishes, so as not to affect their survival.

This recreation requires the support of a true industry, transportation, lodging, boats, rods, baits, reels and other elements, he explained, but in the end it provides profitable chances.

Yera Pompa, three times winner of the Incendio de Bayamo tournament, said the best place in the country for the discipline is the Leonero lagoon, which hosts this annual event in the municipality of Río Cauto, in the province of Granma.

Ibrahim Borroto Ofarril, who has been linked to this sport for decades, spoke in similar terms when stressing that trout fishing can be seen as a significant economic activity, in addition to its ecological aspect, because the international practice consists of capturing the animals and release them.

In the 33rd Incendio de Bayamo tournament, held from January 17 to 20, Yera Pompa won the individual and team events, the latter accompanied by Delvis Pérez Álvarez, while Borroto OFarrill captured the largest specimen (seven pounds and 10 ounces).

Belonging to the family of salmonids, trout is the least fatty of the oily fishes; it has a very tasty meat, and was introduced in Cuba in the third decade of the twentieth century, according to specialists.
