US Economic Blockade Hits Cuban Water Supply Service

Havana, Aug 3 (ACN) Over 600 thousand Cubans are currently receiving drinking water through cistern trucks and not through pipes, particularly due to the impact of the US economic, commercial and financial blockade, said the president of the National Water Institute Antonio Rodriguez.

Washington’s aggressive policy against Cuba blocks the island’s Access to spare parts and equipment and add to this the severe drought affecting the Caribbean nation, said the official during commemorations for Water Workers Day.

However, said Rodriguez, the island’s investment plan for the year 2023 dedicates 2.9 billion Cuban pesos to infrastructure projects.

The traditional Water Worker’s Day promotes good practices in the efficient use of water and underlines the development of hydraulic projects since the first days of the Cuban Revolution, encouraged by Fidel Castro.

According to official stats, the country’s water accumulation capacity increased to over 9 billion cubic meters in nearly 300 reservoirs up to date, up from only 48 million cubic meters in just 13 reservoirs before the 1959 Revolution.
