CIENFUEGOS, Cuba, Jun 6 (ACN) A high quality exportable tobacco was achieved by producer Alcides Hernandez Perez, without applying chemical fertilizers -only with biological products- in his farm El Porvenir in the municipality of Cumanayagua, in the province of Cienfuegos(central Cuba).
In statements to the Cuban News Agency, the farmer said that he applied trichoderma on several occasions to the sowing of that crop, carried out in mid-January of this year, the bacillus with strain 26 and also the biofertilizer product EcoMic.
He also used organic matter, solid and liquid humus as fertilizer against blue mold and pests to make the planting totally ecological.
Hernandez Perez explained that at the same time he planted an area of the line with chemical fertilizer, and noticed that although the development is similar, the plants are more stressed, and this causes green spots on the leaves.
This Cuban farmer planted 2,900 plants on his 9.33 hectare (ha) farm and achieved a good yield of 1.35 tons per ha.
The Corojo 2020 variety planted by the Cienfuegos producer is purely Cuban, from the Pinar del Rio Research Institute, and has proved to be very good when grown in the sandy soils similar to those of the westernmost territory.
With 47 workers, 21 of whom are women, and most of them young, this farmer rebuilt his farm, expanded the infrastructure with additional tobacco curing sheds, and created well-paying jobs.
And above all, with proper management and the application of diverse agroecological actions, Alcides has become a good example for the country by obtaining an emblematic line of the Cuban economy for export.
