Cuban Nitrogen Fertilizer Plant Finishes Year with over 65 Thousand Tons

CAMAGUEY, Cuba, Dec 11 (acn) Revolucion de Octubre factory of nitrogen fertilizers, in the city of Nuevitas, will end the year with 65,000 tons produced for sugarcane and the varied cultivations Cuban agriculture.

Benefited by a project of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA by its Spanish acronym) when it was about to collapse in 2008, the plant partially retook, two years later, the capability of producing the compound.
Félix Abilio Jiménez Quiñones, technical and industry investments manager, said this year's management contributed to promote agricultural programs in the country, and part of the ammonium nitrate was destined for export to countries of the Caribbean area.
Thanks to improvements in equipment it was possible to raise the level of elaboration of chemical fertilizer and restore vitality to the facility, which production until 2008 ranged between 15 000 and 25 000 tons annually, well distant from the 160,000 achieved after coming into operation on December 1975.
The investment valued at nearly 13 million pesos, 60 percent in foreign currency, was financed by a loan from the Industrial Fund of Venezuela, negotiated by ALBA, and consisted essentially in various types of pumps, compressors for ammonia and a new cycle of water cooling with 12 towers.
The technician said the plant, only one devoted to this production in the country, could achieve a level of original manufacture of 120,000 tons, but it now demands a capital maintenance and repair to achieve greater results than today's.
The revival of the factory corresponds with the efforts of ALBA countries in favor of food security of their populations.
