Central Cuba welcomes food donations

SANCTI SPIRITUS, Cuba, Sep 23 (ACN) The distribution of food supplies donated by several countries began Wednesday in the province of Sancti Spiritus to mitigate the situation caused in Cuba by COVID-19 and by the restrictions imposed by the U.S. government.

Yanrobert Suarez Sanchez, deputy director of the local Wholesale Enterprise of Food and other Consumer Goods, told ACN that nine of the 78 containers that should arrive in the province and be delivered to the 188,768 families registered in the Consumer Registry Offices, popularly known as OFICODA, are already in Sancti Spiritus.

Each household will get a free module that includes four kilograms of rice, three kilograms of pasta and one kilogram of refined sugar.

Omar Echemendía García, in charge of managing the so-called Port-Transport-Internal Economy Operation, said that the modules, received at the port of El Mariel, were then transported by railroad to the Loading and Unloading Center in the province of Ciego de Avila, and from there they were transported by road to Sancti Spiritus, where the cargo is reviewed and counted by young Cubans fulfilling their Active Military Service (SMA) as well as by officers of the Cuban Army and its civilian workers.

Distribution to the grocery stores began in the provincial capital, where COVID-19 has created a very complex epidemiological situation, and from there it will continue to the rest of the province as the products arrive.
