LAS TUNAS, Cuba, Sep 19 (acn) Cuba has more than two thousand new hectares of fruit trees, as a result of the work done by groups of urban agriculture in each province.
Upon completion yesterday in Las Tunas of the 66th tour of the National Group of Urban and Suburban Agriculture, chaired by Dr. Adolfo Rodrígurez Nodals, he explained that the areas are located in 96 cooperatives of different territories, incorporated in the last 30 days.
Rodríguez Nodal told ACN that each cooperative has at least 20 hectares, where different varieties of fruit will be enhanced, including those that are running out, as mamoncillo, cashew, canistel and lime, among others.
There is a special program with cherry, aimed at planting one tree for every 10 children, taking into account that it is a fruit coveted by them, and globally it is considered the one with the highest vitamin content, the expert explained.
The Dr. suggested that during the process of creation and development of the fruit plantations, - several years are needed to collect fruits--, short-cycle intercropping is feasible and also taking advantage of the areas for other crops in order to gain income.
The movement for the creation of units specialized in natural juices is growing in the country and the program includes the implementation of two in each municipality, one of which must be linked to the local hospital, he said.
He also praised the Farmers Store in Jobabo town, one of the few in the country that efficiently meets the sale to population of seed or seedlings of fruits, vegetables and medicinal and ornamental plants, as well as biological products, worm humus, supplies, technical assistance and other services
After completing the two-day tour, the group rated as good the eight municipalities and the province, only surpassed by Cienfuegos among the eight visited to date at this stage.
