Raúl and Díaz-Canel pay posthumous tribute to Alicia AlonsoHAVANA, Cuba, Oct 20 (ACN) Army General Raúl Castro Ruz, First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba and President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, attended the funeral honors of prima ballerina assoluta Alicia Alonso, in the Grand Theater that bears her name in this capital.
Also came to pay tribute to the founder of the Cuban ballet school José Ramón Machado Ventura, Second Secretary of the Central Committee of the Party, Esteban Lazo Hernández, President of the National Assembly of People's Power and the Council of State, and other authorities of the Party and the Government.
The four of them performed the last guard of honor, before the departure of the funeral cortege to the Colon cemetery in the Cuban capital, where her remains will rest.
More than 20 thousand Cubans and foreigners attended the funeral of Alicia Alonso in the theater that bears her name and by which personalities of the national culture and people in general have paraded with shows of respect and affection towards the outstanding dancer, choreographer and teacher.
Accompanied by the Cuban flag and thousands of flowers, the coffin with the body of the prima ballerina assoluta was guarded by students of the National Ballet School, while a long line of people passed in front of him to pay her homage and affection, with dissimilar signs of pain and respect.
The burial of her remains will be in a family pantheon in the Necropolis of Christopher Columbus, by will of her loved ones.
Alicia Alonso died on Thursday in the capital, at the age of 98, due to a cardiovascular disease, and her death caused a wide repercussion in the country and the world, with a unanimous recognition to her contributions to the national culture, through the creation of the Cuban School of Ballet and the formation of the public in the appreciation of this manifestation.
