24th Havana International Ballet Festival kicks off on Sunday

HAVANA, Cuba, Oct 29 (ACN) The relevance of the Cuban National Ballet (BNC) for national culture was highlighted this Sunday night by Miguel Díaz-Canel, President of the Councils of States and Ministers of the Republic of Cuba, in his opening remarks of the XXVI International Ballet Festival of Havana.

The president transmitted the congratulations sent by the First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba, Army General Raúl Castro Ruz, to that prestigious company, and especially to its founder, Prima Ballerina Assoluta Alicia Alonso.
For 70 years the BNC has inspired generations of Cubans, who have grown up attending functions offered at symbolic prices, one of the conquests of the Revolution, when that art in other parts of the world is only accessible to high social elites, said Díaz-Canel.
The Cuban President offered a warm welcome to foreign artists from some of the most prestigious international classical ballet companies and other specialists attending the Festival, dedicated on this occasion to the 70th anniversary of the founding of the BNC and the 75th anniversary of Alicia Alonso's stage debut in the role of Giselle.
The Festival began with a concert program in the Great Theater of Havana Alicia Alonso and will run until next November six with shows in the main theaters of the Cuban capital.
The works La muerte de Narciso, interpreted by Dani Hernández, and Sinfonía de Gottschalk, both with the choreographic signature of Alicia Alonso, and danced by several of the first figures of the BNC.
During the gala a creation of the prestigious American ballet master Jerome Robbins, who shared the stage on several occasions during his prolific career with the legendary Cuban dancer, was danced.
This piece was chosen for the occasion to celebrate on October 28th the 40th anniversary of its premiere by the BNC on the same stage, which will host each night a different show during the Festival, one of the Cuban cultural events of greatest significance and power of call at the international level.
