Fernando Ortiz International Award Granted in HavanaHAVANA, Cuba, Jun 25 (ACN) The Fernando Ortiz International Award, the highest distinction granted by the Fernando Ortiz Foundation in the field of socio-cultural studies was given to Mexican ethnologist Carlos Bojorquez Urzaiz.

Bojorquez, one of the most notable researchers of the life and work of Jose Marti in Mexico, received the award from the President of the Writers and Artists Association and Fernando Ortiz Foundation, Miguel Barnet, for his important contribution in the research of popular culture and social sciences.

The General sub Director of the Marti Program Office, Hector Hernandez Pardo praised the work of Bojorquez in the field of anthropology during an activity, which was held at the Bolivar Hall of the Center of Marti Studies.

Hernandez Pardo also referred to the close working and friendship relation that has united Bojorquez with Cuba all his life.

The Mexican researcher explained that he found the main motivation of his work in the search of his own identity and from this the constant investigation of the Mayan roots of his birthplace, which is Yucatan and Cuban background on his grandmother's side.

He also thanked the recognition and expressed that without the Revolution of Fidel Castro he would not have been able to carry out his PhD and will continue studying Marti, loving Cuba and thinking that the Revolution was the best that could have happened to the Caribbean island.

Carlos Bojorquez is currently Director of the Milpa-Maya Research and Technological Innovation Inter-disciplinary Program and is President and founder of the Department of Our America of the Autonomous University of Yucatan, Mexico.

He has broad works, which includes specialized titles in patriotic emigration issues from the Caribbean island to Yucatan during the Cuban independence struggle with emphasis in the thinking of Jose Marti.
