HAVANA, Cuba, Dec 22 (acn) Cuba's First Vice President Miguel Diaz-Canel congratulated the island's teachers on Friday who celebrated Educators Day.
In statements to the Cuban News Agency, he highlighted that teachers and workers of the sector deserve all the "love, respect and admiration for their daily contribution amidst difficult situations and for, above all, having assumed the challenge in teaching our youth".
Interviewed by ACN, The Cuban Education Minister Ena Elsa Velazquez also issued a message in which she recalled that the 56th anniversary of Cuba having declared itself "Free Territory of Illiterates in December.
She pointed out that 2017 has been a year of "lots of work, effort and dedication in which important work has been carried out like the reforms in education and the evaluation of the quality of teaching".
The Education Minister praised the advances in the results of the entry exams to higher education in the 2016-2017 course and the process of teaching values, organization of the work in the schools and the consolidation of students learning.
She recognized that there is much more important work to be done, because the increase in the quality of education does not only imply the command of knowledge and abilities, but also the norms of behavior inside and outside the institutions with the need of the family, organizations and authorities of the territory.
Velazquez commented that 2018 will also be of a lot of effort, "because we will commemorate the 150th anniversary of the beginning of the independence wars and a plan of activities will be organized in the educational sector that will impact the knowledge of History for our students".
She expressed that work is underway in the formation of more teachers, increase the quality of the centers, compliance of the entry plans and the growth of the efficiency of the pedagogical schools.
"The essence in increasing the quality is the teacher, in completing the educational limitations and the work done in each school", said the Education Minister.
