University chair strengthens ties between Cuba and CanadaHAVANA, Cuba, Nov 28 (ACN) The Chair of Canadian Studies at the University of Holguin contributes to the strengthening of cooperation ties between Cuba and Canada, and since its founding in 2005 has received some 400 students and professors from that nation.

Vilma Páez, coordinator of the Chair, which this Wednesday arrives on its 12th anniversary, told the ACN the importance of these links, both for the international recognition of the Holguin institution and for the relations between both countries.

She explained that in these years of hard work, many research and exchange projects have been developed, among which agreements with the Western Ontario University stand out, an institution closely linked to the Holguin educational center for more than 15 years.

According to Páez, the areas of pedagogy and humanities are the fields of greatest impact since the beginning of relations, which is why this year Western academics decided to include new projects around the specialty of Civil Engineering.

In this sense, Cuban and Canadian students and professors work on an interesting proposal aimed at reducing the damages caused by meteorological events such as hurricanes, in the case of this Caribbean country, and tornadoes, in the northern nation, through practical applications of engineering.

The development each year of the Canadian Studies Seminar and the International Conference of foreign languages, communication and culture of wide call, endorse the quality of research and the interest of Cuban and Canadian university students to maintain the good state of these relations.

The Chair of Canadian Studies at the University of Holguín is one of the seven departments that make up the Cuban network dedicated to this subject, located in other universities in Havana, Matanzas, Pinar del Río, Ciego de Ávila and Santiago de Cuba.
